Most of this world's governments pride themselves in the rule of law, yet Jesus taught a far more superior way. In a classic conflict with those whose focus was law, Jesus pursued the greater path of grace and mercy. The story is found in Mark 3:1-6. According to Old Testament law, life and death emergencies were permitted on the Jewish Sabbath, but a matter such as healing a withered hand could wait until that rest day was over. However, Jesus' interpretation of the law was not in the letter but in the spirit. His concern was for the principle: Was it lawful to cause harm or good, save a life or kill? We know that our civil laws don't always make sense in the letter. So it is with the Old Testament laws. They are good laws, but obedience in the letter does not make sense, only the spirit does.
