The Glory of the Cross |
One of the strangest statements of Jesus is found in John 17:1-11. Jesus prayed to the Father in heaven, I have glorified you by finishing the work you gave me to do. Our world looks at royalty, prime ministers and presidents, movie stars and wealthy folks with great real estate holdings, limousines, private jets and expensive yachts as worthy of praise and celebration. An ignominious death on a cross would be the exact opposite of this world’s view of glory. It would be seen as a defeat. Yet it is precisely the opposite in God’s eyes. The wealthy and powerful are often defeated in the important things of life. The self-sacrificing who take up their cross daily are the real winners. All honor and praise and dignity forever goes to the cross and those who live out its purpose.
